Marissa Paredez
Why Did Marissa Choose Bariatric Surgery?
Marissa had always struggled with her weight for as long as she could remember. In her early 20s, she openly spoke about wanting to have weight loss surgery but faced criticism for not trying to lose weight through traditional methods. In 2010, she lost 100 pounds through diet and exercise. However, after a knee injury and the sudden passing of her father in 2012, she regained most of the weight within a year. Life continued, and Marissa got married and became a young mother to two beautiful daughters. Her mobility was limited, and she was constantly tired. One night, in a moment of desperation, she cried to her husband about her sadness and desperation to lose weight. A few days later, a friend introduced her to a Keto challenge, which led her to lose 100 pounds again. However, after having her third child in 2020 and the challenges of living through the COVID-19 pandemic, her weight crept back up by the end of 2021. Her anxiety was overwhelming, and she reached a point where she didn’t want to be seen by anyone, struggling with depression and feeling isolated.

After Surgery: A New Beginning
In March of 2021, Marissa started a new job and witnessed a coworker begin her weight loss journey, which inspired Marissa to consider surgery again. After researching and speaking to several people, she decided on the Better Weigh Center, reassured by its excellent reputation and familiar hospital setting. Her first call to the Better Weigh Center was nerve-wracking, but the staff provided all the necessary information and guided her through the next steps. Marissa watched a seminar to understand the surgery process and had an informative first appointment with Dr. Gopal, who involved her in deciding the best surgical option for her. They chose the Gastric Bypass, and everything afterward went smoothly. She scheduled follow-up appointments, many of which were conducted over the phone, and addressed severe sleep apnea diagnosed during the health screening process. The in-house nutritionist helped her with lifestyle changes and a better relationship with food. Post-surgery zoom classes were invaluable, providing support and reassurance during the confusing recovery period. Regular follow-up appointments with Dr. Gopal ensured she stayed on track with her health and nutrient levels. Today, Marissa is thrilled with her improved health, increased energy, and the ability to actively participate in her family’s life.
