Lloyd Stegemann, M.D., F.A.S.M.B.S. returned to Corpus Christi, TX in 2011, a city he knows quite well having graduated from Carroll High School, to open The Better Weigh Center.
Dr. Stegemann received his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, and then completed his surgical residency in San Antonio, Texas. During his surgical residency, he saw firsthand the devastating health and personal effects of obesity on patients and their families. He also got to witness the enormous impact that bariatric surgery had on patients, not only dramatically improving their health but improving their quality of life. He decided early on in his training to devote his career to battling obesity and the devastating health consequences of this disease.
Dr. Stegemann performs gastric banding, gastric sleeve, and gastric bypass surgical interventions. Having completed more than 1,000 bariatric cases and being designated a Surgical Center of Excellence Surgeon by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), his experience matches his proclivity for compassion and excellence.
Organizing and founding the Texas Association for Bariatric Surgery as part of the ASMBS, he now helps other surgeons across the country organize their own ASMBS chapters.
An active author and speaker lending his talents to Johnson and Johnson in helping launch the Realize Band, and assisting The Discovery Channel in explaining Bariatric Surgery, Dr. Stegemann’s counsel and expertise are highly sought after.
He serves on the Board of Directors for the Obesity Action Coalition, a national non-profit organization that works to educate the public about the disease of obesity, improve access to obesity treatments, and end obesity discrimination.
Dr. Stegemann recently is very excited to be home and to work with Coastal Bend residents to restore their health and hope through weight loss surgery.
Dr. Lloyd Stegemann, a private practice, board certified general surgeon, focuses his practice exclusively on medical and surgical weight loss. He was recognized as a Center of Excellence surgeon by the Surgical Review Corporation and has personally performed over 2,000 weight loss operations including gastric bypass, adjustable gastric banding, sleeve gastrectomy, and revisional surgery.
Dr. Stegemann has been instrumental in organizing the practice of bariatric surgery in the state of Texas. He organized the first meeting of bariatric surgeons in the state which eventually led to the creation of the Texas Association for Bariatric Surgery (TABS) where he served as the group’s first President. Dr. Stegemann is also very involved with the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons and has been an active member on numerous committees. Dr. Stegemann served for many years on the Board of Directors of the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC), the only national non-profit organization that serves to educate the public on matters of weight, increase patient access to obesity treatments, and to end obesity discrimination. He remains active in trying to increase access to obesity treatments and fighting obesity discrimination.
